Remembering the “Day that will live in Infamy”

Yesterday while most of us went about our usual activities, several memorials took place at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as they paused to remember that fateful day in December 1941. There were many men whose family trees ended that day when they were killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The battleship the USS Arizona still lies beneath the surface, where 9 men from the West Alabama area gave their lives. As part of my work with the Tuscaloosa Area Virtual Museum I created a list of all those from the West Alabama area who died during World War II, that list can be found here: https://tavm.omeka.net/collections/show/43.  Almost 2 years ago I had the opportunity to visit the Arizona Memorial while on my honeymoon and can say that it was an extremely moving experience. It is hard to imagine that oil really does still come to the surface until you stand there and see it with your own two eyes. I would say a visit to the island of Oahu is not complete until you visit the World War II Valor in the Pacific Memorial whose website can be found here: http://www.nps.gov/valr/index.htm
