Keep Checking for New Records!

It has long been my habit at work to check both FamilySearch and Ancestry for what new record sets they have added to their collections. If I see something that looks interesting many times I will do a few searches just to see if I get any hits on some of my family or I may look at a random record just to see what the record looks like. All genealogists and researchers should do this on a regular basis. This past week I was rewarded for always checking the new records when I searched this record: U.S., Select Crew Lists and Manifests, 1890-1963. I knew my dad along with his mother and brother had left the United States to join his father in Germany where his father was being stationed and they had gone via ship. It didn’t take me long to find the correct record of them leaving which gave me some very interesting information and also made me curious to see if I could find a record of them returning home. I had never thought to look for either record, but because I did look at the new record sets I was led to a record that had been there for some time. I found a record of their arrival home as well, listing my grandparents along with my dad and his brothers the youngest who had been born in Germany.

Looking at what is new or newly updated on either database is not hard. On Familysearch when you have your list of records either the full set or for a particular county just click on where it says “Last Updated”. This will move the record sets into the order they were last updated. On Ancestry just scroll to the bottom and click on “Recently added/Updated Collections”. I would say to look at these new and updated collections at least once a week or so and you never know what you might find.
